Coors Core Fitness is adding an additional PD Basic class in Anderson. This class will run in 6 week sessions at noon on Thursdays starting May 16th.
This class is similar to the PD Basic class on Tuesday but will offer the caregivers a better chance to participate. Some classes will be driven towards partner involvement and practicing skills for at-home exercise routines. A portion of every class will be devoted to group discussion. This will be a valuable opportunity for class participants as well as caregivers to share concerns as well as success stories during the week.
As a group we can help each other gain strength and positive attitudes!
Along with our record-breaking attendance of more than 250, we received some wonderful feedback on the quality of the program, venue, and topics covered. We will certainly take it into consideration as we begin planning for next year’s forum, and invite you to contribute any additional feedback you may have as you reflect upon the day by phone at (513)558-0113 or 1(877)489-1110 or by email at director@parkinsonswellness.org.
It truly is a never-ending job finding outstanding presenters and making events like the Spring Forum happen. The funding our Parkinson’s Wellness Chapter receives through generous donations is paramount in putting on these programs, but our volunteers who form the Program Committee are absolutely invaluable. If you have the interest and the time, we would welcome your help as a volunteer in any capacity—office work, committee membership, marketing. It’s a way to get involved with a group that is interested in you and to make your voice heard.
As part of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Painting with a Twist in Mason is having a special party to benefit the Parkinson’s Wellness Chapter! The concept pairs instructional art with friends, wine and a lively instructor to produce individual works of art and was featured on CNN Money in February as one of the “5 hot franchises”.
Join us, Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 7-9pm as we paint the Cincinnati Fireworks.

We’re thrilled to announce the Chapter’s involvement in the 2013 Flying Pig Marathon! It’s a big year for the Pig and they’re celebrating with more options to get involved than ever before.
Mark your calendars for the Flying Pig! May 3-5, 2013.
We will be participating in several ways: as a Partner Charity raising money through runners and walkers on Team Steady Strides, as a Volunteer Charity at the Finish Lines, and through the Piggest Raffle Ever.
There is a way for everyone to get involved, and we truly hope you do! The Flying Pig is one of the biggest events in Cincinnati each year; it’s a chance to explore our community and connect with the diverse people in it.
Runners and Walkers
You have all the traditional options available– the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, 10K and 5K Races– plus two new additions, the 3-way and the 4-way.
The 3-Way includes finishing the Toyota 10K and Flying Pig 5K on Saturday, then the Border Energy Half Marathon on Sunday. The 4-Way will include the Toyota 10K and Flying Pig 5K on Saturday and the Flying Pig Marathon on Sunday. Those who do the challenge events will receive additional finishers’ recognition, besides the regular finishers’ medals.
Just by using our Charity Promotional Code, the Chapter gets 10% of your registration fee. Please contact the office at (513)558-0113 or info@parkinsonswellness.org to receive that code.
We’ll be organizing Team Steady Strides to raise money and awareness for the Chapter. More details on that to come!
Donors
If you would like to help Team Steady Strides reach our goal of $5,000, please visit the Flying Pig donations page. Thank you in advance for every single cent!
Volunteers
This year we’re greeting runners at the finish line. One of the best parts of running or walking any of the Flying Pig races are all the smiling and cheering faces you see along the way. If you’re interested in being a ‘Grunt’ with us and spreading some cheer the weekend of May 3-5, 2013, email Dawn Backus.
Piggest Raffle Ever
100% of the money we raise through the raffle stays with our Chapter. And better yet, you have a chance to win BIG through the Pig Drop. Pigs will fly as part of the pig drop, or rather, they’ll fall. From a crane onto a landing pad, specifically. The owner of the pig closest to the bullseye will win a 2-year lease on a 2012 Toyota Prius, and several more pigs will be chosen for additional prizes.
To enter, just go to piggestraffle.com and adopt some piggies today!
This class is appropriate for active and independent Parkinson’s patients. All participants are REQUIRED to bring a caregiver, spouse, and/or friend to assist them. Participants will experience exercises specific to their PD symptoms but that also increase overall fitness. Exercises used involve balance, walking drills, core training, flexibility, cardiovascular and strength training.

At the end of each class, we will practice relaxation and mediation techniques to help release all the “busyness” from our lives.

The Steady Strides Singers are underway! We are a group of people with Parkinson’s and the people who love them who are interested in singing together. Singing is actually great exercise, working on voice issues including volume, articulation, and breathing — all great for those of us whose speech has changed since our diagnosis of PD. And it’s fun! We whoop and sigh and holler and more! And we make beautiful harmony, too.
All are welcome to join us on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 7to 8pm. We meet in the choir room of the Church of the Redeemer at 2944 Erie Avenue in Hyde Park. Park on the Paxton side of the church and enter through the Paxton door (behind the stone wall). If you have questions, contact Elizabeth Grover at lovettgrover@gmail.com or Janet Langhorst at jlanghorst@cinci.rr.com.
